YEAR 1 - BUILD YOUR FOUNDATION
BTEC Nationals are highly practical, career-focused qualifications designed around real-world projects, workshops and performance experiences. You’ll learn by doing — developing the creative, technical and professional skills valued by universities and the performing arts industry.
Year 1 at The Dark Lab is about discovering who you are as a performer and creative artist. You’ll develop your urban dance technique and performance skills, explore different styles and gain a deeper understanding of the creative industries.
Through practical classes, research and live projects, you’ll have opportunities to create original choreography, perform to live audiences and develop your own creative ideas.

YEAR 2 — DEVELOP YOUR CREATIVE IDENTITY
Year 2 is about taking everything you have developed in your first year and pushing it further.
You’ll experience the creative process from the perspective of both performer and choreographer, developing greater confidence across a wider range of dance styles, techniques and performance practices.
You’ll explore both structured and improvised choreography, collaborate with other performers and take greater ownership of your creative work. Practical projects will challenge you to develop original ideas and communicate them confidently through movement.
With regular opportunities to perform to live audiences, Year 2 prepares you to become an independent, versatile and industry-ready creative artist.

CURRICULUM —
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
The Dark Lab curriculum combines practical dance training, performance, choreography and creative development with the professional skills needed to progress within the performing arts industry.
Students will explore a variety of styles and practices, including Urban & Street Dance, Jazz, Contemporary, Improvisation, Choreography and Live Performance.
You’ll respond to creative briefs and stimuli, develop original movement material and learn how to transform an idea into performance.
Alongside practical training, you’ll regularly reflect, evaluate and set personal targets, helping you understand your own development and become a more independent performer.

WHAT COMES NEXT?
The Dark Lab Creative Course is designed to prepare you for your next step in education, training or the creative industries.
On completion of the programme, students may choose to progress to university, specialist dance training, conservatoires, apprenticeships or employment within the performing arts and wider creative sector.
Throughout the course, we’ll support you in identifying your individual strengths, exploring progression opportunities and developing the confidence and professional skills needed to take that next step.

CAREERS —
WHERE COULD THIS TAKE ME?
A qualification in Performing Arts can open the door to a wide range of opportunities both on stage and behind the scenes.
Possible career pathways include professional performer, dancer, choreographer, dance teacher, creative director, movement director, workshop leader, community arts practitioner and other roles across the creative industries.
The skills developed throughout the course — including creativity, communication, collaboration, confidence and leadership — are also highly transferable to further study and employment.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS — ARE YOU READY?
We’re looking for students who are passionate about dance, ready to work hard and excited to develop creatively.
Applicants should meet the academic entry requirements for the programme. Previous experience in GCSE Dance, BTEC Performing Arts, dance training or performance is advantageous, but we’re equally interested in your potential, commitment, creativity and willingness to learn.
Applicants may also be invited to take part in a practical audition or workshop as part of the application process.

GCSEs
Minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 4-5, including at least Grade 4 in English and Maths.
BTEC L2
A minimum of a Pass Grade BTEC L2, preferably in Performing Arts or a related subject.
QUALIFICATION
Pearson BTEC LEVEL 3 National Extended Diploma in Performing Arts
2 Years- 13 Units- Equivalent to 3 A Levels
